What Is IPL for Skin Texture and Tone?
The pursuit of dewy-soft, glowing skin becomes more challenging with age. Even with diligent skincare and sun protection, fine lines, texture, dark spots, and redness can gradually develop.
Up to this point, many treatments have focused on the skin’s surface. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy goes deeper to the source of these concerns through gentle heat and multiple wavelengths of light.
After multiple sessions, you may notice redness and age spots fading, and rough patches replaced with a more luminous texture. Here’s why you should make IPL a core part of your skincare regimen.
Ideal for patients who want to:
- Reduce dark spots and discoloration
- Improve uneven skin tone
- Smooth rough or crepey texture
- Soften the appearance of fine lines
How Does IPL Help Correct Skin Tone and Texture Issues?
Certain lifestyle habits, along with natural age-related changes, can dry out the skin and expose it to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. You may not notice these changes immediately, but as you get older, you might start to fret about lines around your eyes, visible veins and dark patches, or a crepey texture that doesn’t respond to moisture.
IPL therapy, a non-invasive light therapy, can help reverse these effects. After a few treatments, dull skin appears more radiant, textured, and even-toned as blotchy patches begin to fade and smooth over.
How Does IPL Work?
This game-changing aesthetic treatment:
- Uses customizable broad-spectrum light to target and treat a host of skin concerns, from wrinkles to discoloration.
- Pulses are calibrated to target where issues develop and pass to the skin’s deeper layers. Melanin and hemoglobin compounds absorb the light, producing a reaction that breaks down damaged cells and blood vessels to activate the body’s healing response.
- Pigmented areas may temporarily darken before the damaged cells rise to the skin’s surface and flake off. Gradually, a more even tone emerges.
- Treated blood vessels are gradually broken down and cleared by the body, helping reduce visible redness.
- The gentle heat produced by the IPL device also helps close off enlarged, prominent blood vessels and stimulate collagen production.
What Skin Issues Can IPL Improve?
At Vein Centers of Connecticut, we often recommend IPL to improve:
- Pigmentation: The blend of targeted heat and light helps lighten freckles, break down age spots, and fade frustrating concerns deep below the skin.
- Skin Tone: IPL can shrink spider veins and broken capillaries, calm symptoms of rosacea, and minimize hyperpigmentation and ruddy patches.
- Texture: IPL’s ability to increase collagen production helps improve the appearance of fine lines and other visible textural concerns.
What Can You Expect from IPL for Skin Texture and Tone?
To treat common skin tone and texture issues, three to six sessions of IPL therapy may be recommended. We’ll develop your individualized treatment plan based on your concerns, their severity, and your current skin tone, with sessions spaced two to six weeks apart.
What Happens During and After IPL Treatment?
- We’ll assess the condition of your skin and discuss your goals during the initial consultation, using this information to determine the best course of treatment.
- During each appointment, we’ll cleanse your skin before applying a gel and providing goggles for eye protection.
- The IPL device will go over each targeted area, including the face, arms, hands, or chest. Each pulse may feel like a rubber band gently snapping against your skin.
- Afterward, your skin may feel sore and swollen, like a sunburn. However, symptoms typically calm down within four to six hours.
- Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen, and wash and moisturize your skin with gentle products. Skip your makeup routine if your skin feels irritated.
- While your skin may appear more pigmented in the interim, dark spots will begin to crust over and flake off over the next two weeks, revealing softer, more even-toned skin.
- Although some patients report a noticeable change after their first appointment, it can take up to five sessions to see more significant results. We recommend maintenance treatments to extend the effects of IPL therapy.
